Tornado Resistant Glazing

Tornado Resistant Glass and Windows

Beyond Aesthetics

The relatively new field of tornado and hurricane-rated windows has been an interesting new field for us. We gave performed the installation of several glazing systems that meet the standards called for by FEMA P-361, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s third edition of Safe Rooms for Tornadoes and Hurricanes, as well as ICC500 which applies to the design, construction, installation, and inspection of community and residential storm shelters

These windows are designed to withstand 250mph winds with flying debris impact testing of a 15-pound 2×4 traveling at 100mph. Many schools, hospital emergency rooms, police/fire headquarters and other public buildings are opting to include a safe room in their design. Since these rooms must also serve as workable space year round, windows capable of meeting these standards are an important element to these buildings
